During the month of MAY we get to hear the two most exciting announcements in sports: "Down the stretch they come!" and "Ladies and Gentlemen--START YOUR ENGINES!" May is the month to celebrate Mother's Day and Memorial Day, starting the summer tan, getting out to Lake Meade, and having to finally turn on the air conditioning all the while cursing the ever increasing daily temperature. But hey we do live in the desert!

2012 marks Dr. Wineman’s 10th year in private practice. Over the past ten years, we have been indeed lucky to maintain a wonderful and loyal patient base. We see many of your friends and neighbors, coworkers and bosses; we frequently have little reunions in our lobby.

Our FIRST ANNUAL SHOW THE LOVE campaign winner, Ms. TH, is continuing with her extensive treatment In order to restore her mouth to optimal oral health, Dr. Matthew Cox, one of our favorite referral endodontists, located at the corner of Wigwam and Eastern graciously donated his services to our patient at no cost. Our fixed prosthodontics laboratory, Logic Dental Designs, (www.logicdentaldesigns.com), also wanted to participate and donated their services and expertise. Stay tuned for final pictures. Needless to say our patient is thrilled that someone gave her such a special gift.

Christmas and New Year's Day have come and gone. January frequently means more wintry weather and perhaps even a chance of snow in the valley. However with the recent milder weather, with afternoon temperatures in the mid 60's, some may think that winter has aleady passed us by. What is true is that with the arrival of 2012, our patients who possess an insurance plan which renews on January 1st, they have their entire annual maximum dental support now at their disposal. Unfortunately that also means that the "pesky" annual deductible is also back in play.
With 2012 NFL Draft completed, the arguments can begin regarding which team had the best draft class. One could argue that Dr. Wineman's team the PITTSBURGH STEELERS had a very good if not great draft. We will just have to wait until football season to see if these rookies actually contribute to winning games. MAY means 3 professional sports seasons are still going on. The NBA just started their playoffs and the NHL is into the second round of its playoffs. Our own Wranglers are into the semifinals of their league championship. With all the activity, many people forget that MLB is now into its second month of play as are our Las vegas 51s. One perfect game has already been pitched. Any casino will accept any bet you are willing to place. However, no one should bet on their oral health remaining perfect without professional support. Many patients choose to visit the dentist only when they are experiencing pain or swelling. Most people are more diligent changing their car's oil, than taking care of themselves. Wouldn't it make sense to do "preventive maintenance" on the area of your body that is so essential to daily living: eating, speaking, smiling, and smooching? Insurance companies are always trying to cut costs and pay less for patient's services. Within the past year, we have noticed some insurances pay for the "cheapest yet clinically acceptable" alternative for services like crowns and bridges. The bottom line is that while the insurance can decide to pay the cheapest alternative treatment it may not be what you would choose given all the information. Although Dr. Wineman has dispatched numerous appeals letters, the answer is always the same from the senior claims respresentative: "the contract with the employer allows us to pay the lesser amount and the patient is responsible for the difference." Dr. Wineman suggests that all patients contact their health benefits advisor in the HR department to learn how your company will act should you have a need a crown or a bridge.

If you have put off any needed treatment during 2011, now is the time to think about using your dental benefits. Insurance companies love those clients who pay their premiums religiously, BUT NEVER SEEK CARE OR COMPLETE REQUIRED TREATMENT. Do not be one of those patients whose benefits simply convert into company profits.
GREAT NEWS FOR STATE OF NEVADA EMPLOYEES: We were recently informed that the state dental program is not going to be as austere as was first expected. Starting in July 2011, state employees will be allowed to receive exams, x-rays and either 4 dental cleanings or 4 periodontal maintenance visits per year. However, the annual maximum will drop from $1500 to just $1000, the deductible will increased to $100 per person, and the co-payment for routine procedures was increased from 20% to 25%. Call us--ask for Caitlin--she is our State Employee Insurance Expert---if you have any questions. Now may be the best time to get any needed work completed before your insurance is decreased and your out of pocket cost increases.
